Thursday, Jan. 12, the Garretson high school wrestling team traveled to Freeman for a five-team dual. Teams participating were #1 rated team in class B Canton, Marion/Freeman, Chester, and Viborg/Hurley. We ended the night going 2-2 with loses coming from Canton and a 42-40 loss from Marion.
The team started off slow but started to pick it up throughout the night. Wrestler of the night was Brock Bonte, picking up 3 big wins for the Dragons. Bonte ended the night 3-1 with his loss coming from a good wrestler from Canton.
On Saturday, January 14th we had the Tri-Valley Invitational. This was a tough 20 team tournament.
"It wasn't our day today and we know there will be better days ahead," Coach Schleuter said.
The lone place winner in this tournament was Jaden Richter, who placed 2nd. Richter had a big final match as he went head-to-head with the #1-ranked wrestler in the state at the 285-pound weight class. He fell just short, losing 1-0.
"That's our first time seeing Nelich from Tri-Valley this year," Coach Schleuter said. "I was impressed with how Richter battled, we just need to improve on some things and hopefully we can get the W in the next big spot of the year."
The Dragons were back in action on Tuesday, January 17th at Sioux Valley (results not available at press time), and will be on the home mats for the Parkston-Sioux Falls Lincoln Triangular on Tuesday, January 24 at 5:00 p.m.
