The Garretson American Legion Post 23 is happy to announce the very first Garretson High School student selected to attend the South Dakota Youth Trooper Academy. Oliviyah Thornton, a GHS Junior, will attend the SDYTA held at the Law Enforcement Training Center in Pierre, the week of July 12 thru the 16th.
The SDYTA is a joint program sponsored by The American Legion and the South Dakota Highway Patrol started in 2011. The program is open to male and female high school students who are interested in Law Enforcement, Military or both. Candidates must be in good academic standing with their school and be of good moral character.
Twenty-four students have been selected from across the state. The academy is a paramilitary style program that will include an abbreviated Police Academy curriculum. Students will be taught leadership, teamwork, patriotism, speaking and other skills to help prepare them for their futures. The academy is both physically and mentally challenging. Professional State Troopers will mentor the students throughout the week. Students will receive both classroom and hands on instruction and will have the opportunity to hear from representatives from other Law Enforcement agencies and Military. American Legion members will be there to support wherever needed. Graduation will be held on Friday July 16th at 1P.M.
Henry G. Fix Post 23 congratulates Oliviyah for her selection to this outstanding American Legion program. Anyone interested can find more information by going to sdlegion.org and search programs.
