Garretson area families will soon have the opportunity to assist local Veterans to travel to Washington, D.C. to visit THEIR memorials.

Members of Garretson’s Henry G. Fix Post 23, The American Legion, have eagerly accepted the challenge to partner with other South Dakota American Legion Posts, to sponsor a full flight organized by Midwest Honor Flight.  Every $753 raised will send one Veteran to see the memorials to their service. Chaperones for Veterans participate by covering the full cost of their personal travel.

World War II Veterans waited patiently for over 65 years for a memorial that recognizes their service and accomplishments. Similarly, Korean and Vietnam Veterans have been waiting for years to see their memorial as well. They ALL deserve this special opportunity to visit their memorials as America’s “Thank You” for their service and sacrifice.

Members of Post 23 American Legion and Auxiliary will serve both breakfast and lunch on Sunday, October 3, 2021 in the American Legion building on Main Street in Garretson, SD. A breakfast menu of made-to-order omelets or scrambled eggs and ham will be served from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A lunch menu of hamburgers or hot dogs with chips will then be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Generous free will donations are encouraged to assist in ensuring the success of this bold effort. Personal, business and corporate gifts have been received to fund the costs of the meals allowing all donations to go directly towards sponsorship of the flight. Donations, identified for Honor Flight, may also be mailed directly to Post 23, P.O. Box 376, Garretson SD 57030.

Midwest Honor Flight representatives will also be available to provide information and register eligible Veterans for future flights.
