Dale Schmiesing, age 92 of Garretson, SD died August 28th at the Doughtery House in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by his family. Celebration of Life will begin at 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson. Interment with be in the Hills of Rest Cemetery, Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM Tuesday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Zion Lutheran Church building fund or Henry G Fix Post 23 in Garretson, SD.
Dale Henry Schmiesing was born July 22, 1932, to Gustav and Elaine Schmiesing in Lucan, MN. The family moved to Garretson when Dale was a young child where he met many of his lifelong friends.
Dale met Agnes Geraets at a dance at the Pavilion in Dell Rapids. They were united in married on May 7, 1953. They made their home in Sioux Falls for a short period of time before moving to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO while Dale was in the Army. They moved back to Sioux Falls where Dale drove truck for John Morrell for over 40 years, retiring in 1994. Dale enjoyed visiting with the many store owners and managers that he delivered meat to. After retirement, they moved to Garretson where Dale went to work for CHS delivering feed to the surrounding farmers. They lived in Garretson till October 2019 after which they became residents of Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids. Agnes passed away on February 3, 2021. They celebrated 67 wonderful years together, with many great memories. They had several very close couples that spent many nights together dancing the night away or playing cards.
Dale was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson, SD and was an usher for many years. He was an active member of the Henry G Fix Post 23 American Legion for over 60 years. Dale enjoyed fishing, golfing, dancing and playing cards. Dale and Agnes spent many nights dancing at the Arkota Ballroom and the Luverne VFW and numerous other old-time dances. They especially enjoyed attending the Polka Festivals in MN. After retirement, Dale and Agnes wintered in Arizona, Texas, and Florida with Barb and Louis. Over the years, they have enjoyed many fishing trips and thoroughly enjoyed going to the river with Sharon and Bill.
Dale passed away on August 28, 2024, at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 92 and was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Marlyn Anderson, and son-in-law, Jerry W. Johnson.
Dale is survived by his daughters, Barbara Phipps (Louis), Pensacola, FL, Sharon Dickson (Bill), Custer, SD, Renae Benda (Brian), Dell Rapids, SD and son, DeWayne (Connie), Sioux Falls, SD, six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 6 great, great grandchildren plus one more due in December. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Rose Ann Slinger, and Joyce Geraets and many nieces and nephews and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Dougherty House for their exceptional care and also to the staff at Orchard Hills who always looked out for him and gave him an extra hand when needed.
