Local horse barn destroyed in weekend fire

Date:

powell fire

On Saturday, the Garretson Volunteer Fire Department was called out in sub- zero temperatures to the property of Ed and Lynda Powell. The barn, which housed their horses, was on fire.

Luckily, all the animals made it out of the barn safely, and no one was hurt. The fire was reportedly caused by an attempt to thaw a frozen water hydrant.

Their horses and barn have been a mainstay viewing as residents and visitors enter town on Dows Street for many years, and the community has rallied around the family as they recover from their devastating loss.

Update 2-19-21: The initial publication of this article blamed the fire on reports of an incorrect source. This error has been corrected.
