Fireworks from the 2019 display

This 4th of July weekend is promising a couple of great activities! Grow Garretson is bringing back its annual “Movies in the Park” activity on Friday, and on Saturday, the Legion will be hosting its annual fireworks display.

This is the 3rd year for Movies in the Park, and while its start has been delayed due to the pandemic, Grow Garretson board member Carrie Moritz said they’re planning to host two movies this year. They will be airing “The Sandlot” on Friday, a classic 4th of July and summer-style movie from the 1990’s, at the Jaycee’s Sports Complex north of the picnic shelter. The second movie will be during Jesse James Days, and Moritz said that movie hasn’t quite been decided yet.

The movie is hosted in conjunction with Renovation Church and the Garretson Parks Advisory Committee. Concessions will be available, but admission is free. A freewill donation box will be available, with proceeds going towards the picnic shelter that is planned for the Split Rock Park playground.

Then, on Saturday, Garretson will again have its annual fireworks display at the Garretson Athletic Complex, co-hosted by the Garretson American Legion, Henry G. Fix Post #23, the Garretson Volunteer Fire Department, the Garretson Ambulance, and the Garretson Public School District. They will also be offering freewill donation options, as those donations make the display possible each year. Due to the pandemic, no seating in the football field bleachers will be offered. Attendees are encouraged to utilize areas outside the field for viewing.

Both events, while they will be held outdoors, do encourage attendees to follow social distancing practices for everyone’s safety. Bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets, as seating will not be provided at either event.
