Legion team takes loss against Madison in Consolation finals

            Garretson Legion's hopes for a consolation win were dashed last Wednesday, July 20, when they lost to Madison late in the game. This marked the end of the baseball team's 2022 season. Overall, the team had a win-loss score of 10-8 and a batting average of .302.

            "I’d like to mention that the team did a great job all summer representing Henry G. Fix Post 23 and the Garretson community," said coach Jay Swatek. "You can be proud of these young men!"

Garretson Legion Grabs Lead in Sixth Inning to Defeat Post 70 Flandreau

            Garretson Legion ran off with the lead late in the game in a 5-3 victory over Post 70 Flandreau on Tuesday in the first consolation round of the region playoffs.  The game was tied at three with Garretson Legion batting in the bottom of the sixth when Flandreau's Kolby Peters induced Tayson Swatek to hit into a fielder's choice, but it allowed two runs to cross home plate, cinching the win.

            Garretson Legion fired up the offense in the second inning, when Ryan Flanagan singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

            Dylan Kindt was the winning pitcher for Garretson Legion. The lefty allowed five hits and three runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out six.  Cole Koch threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.  Koch recorded the last out to earn the save for Garretson Legion.

            Peters took the loss for Post 70 Flandreau. Peters went six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out four and walking zero.

            Garretson Legion had nine hits in the game.  Kindt and Jake Schroeder all managed multiple hits for Garretson Legion.  Kindt went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Garretson Legion in hits.

Garretson Legion Falls to Madison After Seventh Inning Score

            Wednesday's game against Madison was a heartbreaker for Garretson Legion, as they lost the lead late in a 14-11 defeat, ending Garretson's season.  Madison trailed 11-10 in the top of the seventh inning when Madison's #33 tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring three runs.

            Despite the loss, Garretson Legion did collect four hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Madison had nine hits on the way to victory.

            Garretson Legion captured the lead in the first inning.  Ryan Flanagan's sac fly scored one run for Garretson Legion.

            Madison knotted the game up at nine in the top of the sixth inning.  #11 doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

            Madison's #11 was the winning pitcher for Madison. The hurler lasted two innings, allowing one hit and two runs while walking one.  #4 threw four and a third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

            Jaylen Kemp took the loss for Garretson Legion. Kemp lasted one and one-third innings, allowing three hits and five runs while striking out four.

            Isaiah Gnadt started the game for Garretson Legion. Gnadt surrendered nine runs on six hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking one #7 started the game for Madison. The pitcher allowed two hits and seven runs over two-thirds of an inning, striking out one.

            Cole Koch, Flanagan, Kemp, and Nate Skillman each collected one hit to lead Garretson Legion.  Garretson Legion tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Koch led the way with three.

            Madison racked up nine hits on the day. #33 went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Madison in hits.
