Last week, the Lady Dragons began their postseason play, competing against the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Wednesday taking the win from the sixth-seeded team with a 63-37 score. The game, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed to Wednesday after COVID19 hit the Garretson basketball coaching team.
This meant that Garretson JH GBB Coach Amber Williamson, Athletic Director Kevin Steckler and Football Coach Chris Long stepped in to lead in place of Coach Matt Schrank and Assistant Coach Bev Howe.
Despite the win, the game began neck-in-neck, with the Quarriers giving little up on the defense and hitting the basket on offense. The Dragons pressed on, pulling ahead and keeping the lead after half-time. In the fourth quarter, they widened the lead twenty points, ultimately pulling out the win.
This moved the Dragons on to the second round of Region play against Region 3A second-seeded Sioux Falls Christian on Friday, with the Chargers hosting. The Lady Dragons played hard, but the Chargers pulled ahead early in the first quarter and didn’t let go. They lost 37-60, ending their play for the year.
The Chargers will be facing Flandreau in the SoDak 16 on March 5. The Blue Dragons ended the year with a record of 17-5.
