Garretson hosted their first track meet of the year, the Jesse James Invitational, on April 9. It was the largest crowd the Garretson Sports Complex had seen in years, with more than 900 students participating from 14 school districts. The weather was sunny, though cool and windy.
Overall, Sioux Falls Christian and Chester Area took first in men's and women's events.
"Congrats to our Girls Team Champions...Sioux Falls Christian, and our Boys Team Champions...Chester Area," said Athletic Director Kevin Steckler. "Although we had several setbacks today, it turned out to be a great day for the athletes to compete."
One of those setbacks was the 100-meter dash, which had to be re-run because the lines were not set properly after the hurdles competition.
The enormous crowd was important to note.
"I can't remember when it's been more full," said Superintendent Guy Johnson, in his report to the school board on Monday night.
