The Garretson High School is participating in the regional One Act Play competition next week Wednesday in Madison with its newest show, "The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon!" by Don Zolodis.
This fun, fast-paced romp through all 209 of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales ("That's like 3 stories per minute!" "Or more, if you actually know math," state the narrators), jumps through the stories of Rapunzel, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Rumplestiltskin, and more, while adding in hijinks from the actors ("I thought there was food here!") and a fast-paced lightning round.
"Just when you think you know where the story is going, it takes a sharp left turn," said Director Erika Brown.
Narrators Drew Pederson and Morgan Moritz "lead" the actors through their pieces, at points telling them when to perform their cues. Actors switch characters and props regularly.
"It's a hot mess," said Moritz, who also said she was having fun with the show's antics.
"Casting this show was an absolute delight," said Brown. "It is a welcome challenge to place those students who audition into roles that will help them grow as actors, become confident in their skills, and find a place on stage."
Brown is glad to have the crew she has. "I am always grateful for students who are passionate about the behind-the-scenes roles as well. Kim Mackiewski has been a great addition to the directing and costuming crew. Working as a full cast has been a tremendous joy and each rehearsal new progress is evident on stage."
The community performance will be held on Sunday, January 24 at 5:00 p.m. in the old gym at the school. While attendance will not be limited, face masks and social distancing are expected. The regional competition performance will be on Wednesday, January 27 in Madison. If the troupe makes it to State, the performances will be held on February 4-6 in Rapid City.
