GHS Girls Basketball Recap

Date:

Last week, the Garretson Girls Basketball team took on Canton and Deubrook, the first of which was in the Dragons' Lair. While the game against Canton was a difficult one for the team, the athletes were victorious in their fight against the Dolphins.

Against Canton, the team lost 33-57 on the home court.

"We talked about getting off to a hotter start than we did Saturday [against Chester], and that wasn’t the case for the home team," said Head Coach Matt Schrank. "They (Canton) came out with a great offensive start to the game out-scoring us 20-8 in the first quarter.”

The powerhouse opponents drove the Dragons into the ground, causing the athletes to start flagging early.

"Their inside game proved to be too much, and they shot great from the outside to match it," said Schrank.

Adi Fink carried the game with 10 points, followed by Jordyn Williams with 8 points and Sydney Olson with 6.

The team then played on Saturday, December 16th in the Entringer Classic in Colman. There, they showed their prowess. The Dragons played against the 3-1 Deubrook Dolphins, and were able to come from behind in the fourth quarter to take home the win.

"The game was back and forth early on, and Deubrook built a 6-point lead at halftime," said Coach Schrank. "Deubrook started early in the 3rd quarter and we were down by 10 points."

It wasn't over until the final buzzer, though.

"We fought back to trail only by 1 going into the 4th quarter," said Schrank. "We came alive offensively in the last quarter, outscoring Deubrook 23 to 11."

The final score was 60 to 49, bringing the team's season score to 3-2.

Adi Fink was named game MVP with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Sydney Olson had 17 points, Jordyn Williams had 10, Tayler Benson had 8, Kylie Christensen with 6, and Ava Ockenga chipped in with 3.

The team then traveled to Dell Rapids to take on the Quarriers on Tuesday (results not available at press time), before heading into the holiday break. Their next game will be on January 2 in Dell Rapids again, this time with Dell Rapids St. Mary's.
