Garretson had another on-the-road victory this past Friday against Irene/Wakonda.
“We made some improvements on the defensive side of the ball this week and need to continue that as the regular season comes to an end,” said Chris Long. “We have two really strong opponents coming to town in the near future.”
GHS scored the only touchdown in the first quarter. Dylan Kindt made an 8 yard pass to Jayse Miller for the first touchdown of the night. Jenna VanHolland made her first extra point kick of the night.
In the second quarter, GHS had two more passing touchdowns, one to Cooper Long (5 yards) and the other to Tayson Swatek (10 yards). VanHolland didn’t miss a kick, and so with only a minute left on the clock GHS led 21-0.
The Irene/Wakondans, however, fought back and with 13 seconds left on the clock, scored their first touchdown of the night, though their attempt at a two point conversion pass was blocked.
In the third quarter, Kindt ran the ball in 3 yards for a touchdown and VanHolland kicked that pig right in the sweet spot yet again.
In the final quarter, Kindt made a 3 yard pass the ball to Caydn Ockenga for 3 yards. VanHolland again didn’t miss a single extra point kick all night, putting the score at 35 to 6 for GHS.
Wakondan quarterback Dashel Spurrell made a run of 4 yards to touchdown, and likewise completed a pass to Garret Libby to bring that score to 35-14 with only two minutes left on the clock. But the Irene/Wakondans could not wrestle their way to the end zone again before the clock ticked down.
“Our offensive line (Dylan Jessen, Clay Lardy and Gabe Johnson) did some nice things,” said Long. “We have to get a little more consistent up front especially in short yardage and in the red zone. But, overall, this was one of our best games of the season up front.
“Carson Clark had the opportunity to get his hands on the ball this week and make some nice runs,” said Long. (Clark rushed a total of 106 yards and also was in the top spot for tackles, with 7 tackles for the game.) “He has some elusiveness and he gives us some options at the running back spot.
“We have a BYE week and it comes at a really good time,” said Coach Long. “We are a little nicked up in the injury department and these two weeks will give us a good chance to heal, make some adjustments and add a few we've been looking at."
