Garretson Football was delayed by bad weather twice this past week. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 28 was delayed as severe weather hit the area. Damage was only minimal to the Garretson area, but there was hail, high winds, flash flood rains and lightning the night in question, so football was ultimately canceled.
The Dragons instead played on Monday night, Aug. 30, starting at 4:30 p.m. They played until the third quarter when black clouds and lightning again were sighted. The officials suspended the game temporarily and waited out the potentially dangerous weather. Less than an hour later the game started up again.
This was a rough game for the Blue Dragons. The Hanson Beavers have a tough defense and an aggressive offense.
“Hanson has a good team,” said head coach Chris Long. “They execute well, are fundamentally a team that will win a lot of games this year. We were close in a lot of ways in that game, we just have to continue to improve.”
The game started out poorly for the Blue Dragons, with the Beavers scoring early on in the first quarter. It was a testament to Blue Dragon defense, that they didn’t score any more points that first quarter. The Dragons fought back, pushing our line closer and then a handoff and rush by Hunter Abraham got GHS their first light on the scoreboard. They were unable get the two-point conversion however.
The half ended 6-8, with the Dragons down, but not out yet.
The third quarter was a grueling match, with advances and checks on both sides, but no score. It was also when the game was delayed by bad weather. When the third quarter resumed, there was still no commanding play by either side. The fourth quarter was first dominated by the Beavers, who scored another touchdown and made a successful two-point conversion. Garretson rallied, and came back for a touchdown of their own, and this time were successful for with their own two-point conversion. But Hanson scored again, and despite a rally of plays that took Garretson so close to the end zone that the fans could smell a comeback not far off, the Dragons just couldn’t break through the dam that was the Beaver’s defense. The game ended 2414.
“Dylan Kindt threw the ball pretty well again for us and we are improving on running the football,” said Coach Long. “Cooper Long made some nice plays (4 catches for 151 yards). He is one of 4 or 5 guys that can make plays in the passing game. Hunter Abraham and Carson Clark did a nice job in the run game...those two need to continue to give us good reps at running back for us to be a balanced team."
The Blue Dragons will travel to Parkston this Friday, Sept. 3.
