The VFW 16U state tournament for Class B was held this past weekend, starting at noon on Friday, August 9 with Wessington Springs facing off against Parkston.
Garretson was slated to play that evening at 8:00 p.m. against Emery, but due to storms that moved through the area, the game was delayed to Saturday morning.
Garretson won the game with Emery with a score of 10- 9, where the two teams were neck and neck until the final inning. Garretson was able to prevent any scores on their final turn in the outfield, cinching their win.
They then faced off against Tyndall that evening, where a disappointing 4 points were scored by Tyndall in the bottom of the 5th, bringing the score to 0-4. Garretson was able to rally slightly with two runs at the top of the 6th, but were not able to pull out the win, ending with a score of 2-6.
However, Garretson was able to aim for 3rd place on Sunday, facing against Parkston. Both teams kept the other from scoring through the first four innings, but the fifth had each team scoring one point each, keeping them neck and neck.
In the final inning, the fates were decided when Parkston pulled off four points but Garretson knocked out five points in the bottom of the 7th, cinching the win with a score of 6-5.
First and second place of the tournament went to Canova and Tyndall, respectively. The championship game ended with a score of 7-9 in favor of Canova.
