Garretson Legion nabs wins, bringing season to 5-3

            The Garretson Legion baseball team took home three wins over the past week, beginning with the Post 911 Chargers and ending with Madison. This brings their season to 5-3 as they look to take on two more teams at the end of this week.

Garretson Legion Nabs Win Over Post 911 Chargers Despite Early 4-Run Inning

            Garretson Legion weathered a scare by Post 911 Chargers on the field at Augustana University on Tuesday, June 21. Garretson Legion coughed up four runs in the third inning, but Garretson Legion still won 19-7. 

            The big inning for Post 911 Chargers came thanks to a walk by Aidan Strandberg, a fielder's choice by Kaden Huyser, and an error on a ball put in play by Caden Reitz.

            There was plenty of action on the basepaths as Garretson Legion collected 18 hits and Post 911 Chargers had five.

            Garretson Legion got things started in the first inning when Cole Koch singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

            Garretson Legion notched seven runs in the sixth inning.  The offensive firepower by Garretson Legion was led by Cadyn Ockenga, Ryan Flanagan, Treyton Chester, Jaylen Kemp, and Colby Buseman, all driving in runs in the inning.

            Isaiah Gnadt earned the win for Garretson Legion. The righty lasted two and a third innings, allowing one hit and four runs while striking out two.  Jake Schroeder and Koch entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

            Jake Isakson took the loss for Post 911 Chargers. The righty surrendered 12 runs on 15 hits over four innings, striking out three and walking zero.

            Garretson Legion hit one home run on the day. Flanagan went yard in the first inning.

            Garretson Legion tallied 18 hits.  Jayse Miller, Koch, Schroeder, Nate Skillman, and Dylan Kindt all collected multiple hits.  Schroeder, Koch, and Miller all had three hits to lead Garretson Legion.  Koch led with four stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with ten stolen bases.

Garretson Legion Grabs Lead in Sixth Inning for Victory Over Vermillion

Garretson Legion snagged a late lead and defeated Vermillion 5-3 on Saturday, June 25.  The game was tied at three with Garretson Legion batting in the top of the sixth when an error scored one run for Garretson Legion.

            Vermillion got things started in the second inning when #22 singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

            In the top of the fifth inning, Garretson Legion tied things up at three.  Jayse Miller drove in one when Miller singled.

            Dylan Kindt earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for Garretson Legion. The lefty surrendered zero runs on zero hits over two and a third innings, striking out three and walking one.

            Vermillion's #4 started the game allowing six hits and three runs over five innings, striking out four, while Vermillion's #2 took the loss. The bulldog lasted two innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out two.

            Colby Buseman started the game for Garretson Legion. The hurler lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out eight.

            Garretson Legion tallied nine hits on the day.  Miller, Tayson Swatek, and Ryan Flanagan each collected multiple hits for Garretson Legion.  Miller led Garretson Legion with three hits in four at bats.  Garretson Legion didn't commit a single error in the field. Jaylen Kemp had eight chances in the field, the most on the team.

            Vermillion scattered eight hits in the game.  #4 and #5 each had multiple hits for Vermillion.

Garretson Legion Blows Away Madison by Six Runs

            Garretson Legion sailed to an easy victory over Madison 9-3 on Saturday, June 25 in Vermillion.

            Garretson Legion got things started in the first inning when Jake Schroeder singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

            The team tallied three runs in the sixth inning.  Garretson Legion batters contributing to the big inning included Dylan Kindt, Cole Koch, and Colby Buseman, who each had RBIs in the inning.

            Kindt was the winning pitcher for Garretson Legion. Kindt surrendered two runs on two hits over four and a third innings, striking out seven.  Koch threw two and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.

            Madison's #8 took the loss, allowing eight hits and nine runs over five and a third innings, striking out one.

            Garretson Legion collected ten hits on the day.  Koch, Nate Skillman, Kindt, and Ryan Flanagan all managed multiple hits for Garretson Legion.  Flanagan, Kindt, Skillman, and Koch each collected two hits to lead Garretson Legion.  Garretson Legion was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Flanagan made the most plays with nine.

            The team will take on Dakota Valley tonight (Thursday) on the home field, with the game starting at 6:30 p.m., and tomorrow (Friday) will look to send Elk Point-Jefferson back home with their tails between their legs, also starting at 6:30 p.m. at Tandberg Field.
