After a slow start to the baseball season due to the pandemic, action has picked up in the past few weeks as games and tournaments are played. The Garretson 18U team competed in the Legion 18/19U baseball tournament this last weekend in Garretson. Seven teams competed for the title, with the championship game battled out by the Tea Tincaps versus Luverne. The Tincaps ultimately won 8-7. Garretson won against Hamlin on Saturday but lost its games against Worthington and Luverne.
Garretson 18U Defeated by Worthington, MN
Worthington, MN got things started in the second inning. Worthington’s #36 grounded out, scoring one run.
In the bottom of the second inning, Garretson 18U tied things up at one when Josef Zahn singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.
Worthington, MN pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning. In the third #27 singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs and #36 tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
#27 got the win for Worthington, MN. He allowed five hits and one run over six innings, striking out 11. #22 threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Trey Buckneberg took the loss for Garretson 18U. He allowed five hits and three runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking zero.
Dylan Kindt started the game for Garretson 18U. He allowed two hits and one run over two innings, striking out one.
Kindt, Lucas Fitzgerald, Jake Schroeder, Zahn, and Nate Skillman each managed one hit to lead Garretson 18U. Garretson 18U was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Cole Skadsen had the most chances in the field with seven.
#27 went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Worthington, MN in hits.
Garretson 18U wins contest against Hamlin on Saturday, 6-1
Cole Skadsen earned the win for Garretson 18U. He went six innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out nine. Ryan Flanagan threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
#11 took the loss for Hamlin. He went five and a third innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out six.
Garretson 18U totaled eight hits. Nate Skillman and Ben Konechne all collected multiple hits for Garretson 18U. Konechne and Skillman each managed two hits to lead Garretson 18U.
#32 went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Hamlin in hits.

Garretson defeated by Luverne 4-0
The team finished the contest on Saturday with a 0-4 loss against Luverne. Luverne scored in the bottom of the first after a ground ball by #14 and error by third basemen Nate Skillman, with #6 scoring. Garretson came back swinging at the top of the second inning, but were unsuccessful in gaining any ground. Luverne scored again twice in the bottom of the fifth, after #3 and #21 score. During the sixth inning, #16 scored after a single on a line drive to right fielder Ben Konechne by #14.
Lucas Fitzgerald pitched the entire game, allowing two hits and four runs.
Garretson will be competing in Region tournaments starting on Monday, July 27 in Vermillion.
The Garretson 18U team competed against the McCook-Miner Legion team on Monday, July 13. Garretson ultimately won 5-4, taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at four with Garretson 18U batting in the bottom of the sixth when Nate Skillman doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. (Photos by Angela Bly)
