The August Commercial Club meeting was brought to order by President John Brinkman. After reviewing and discussing the updated Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports, both were approved and passed.

In old business, Brinkman discussed the golf tournament saying that it was the most successful one to date. This year came with a few changes, one being that the meal was served at noon rather than after the tournament. It sounds like this change was a hit and will carry over into the next tournament.

Moving into new business, discussion of Hometown Christmas began. The plan is to hold Hometown Christmas on December 11th (the second Saturday of December) and the Commercial Club brunch to be held in the Legion from 9:00am to noon, as it’s been done in previous years. Legion member Rod agreed to ask for volunteer cooks for brunch. Carrie added that Light the Park will be happening and that the park board is already planning for it, and John added that the Parade of Lights will be happening again as well.

Next on the agenda was replacing most Christmas lights with LED bulbs. John said the cost came to about $1 a bulb, and most businesses are willing to cover the cost of their own lights. There was some talk about making sure the wires are in good shape, and if any need to be replaced this would be a good time for that.

The big topic of this meeting came next, the sound system update. Jerry Cook came to inspect and make a plan for the sound system to go along with Greenhoff’s boring work. John said he is waiting on Cook’s official estimate. Originally, the sound system main box was planned to be installed at City Hall. However, City Hall is planning to move out of that building so Jordan Doane mentioned putting it in the library- which is owned by the City and more centrally located. There was a point made that the box could be installed in the Gazette’s new building as well, and the Moritz’s said they could make that work.  The conversation then turned to Greenhoff’s boring work and bill, and who is going to pay that. After quite a bit of conversation between the City and Commercial Club, it was decided that the Commercial Club would cover the full cost but the City would reimburse that with next year’s budget.

There were no updates on the big sign or new Commercial Club website. The final part of this meeting was Garrick motioning to have Ron Luke replace Omar Thornton on the board as O So Good is officially out of Garretson. It was passed without hesitation, and Ron is officially a board member (again).

The next meeting will be September 8th at The Gulch.
