That is one full river! Starting the week of June 20th there was rain for more than three days straight. The City of Garretson’s Splitrock Park had to be closed because of the high waters on Friday, June 22, though they did reopen the next day. Palisades State Park didn’t have to close, but they did advise campers not to go on certain trails and put a hold on two campsites near the torrential waters.
Though there have been several days of sunshine since, there have also been frequent showers that have kept the waters flowing high and fast. The National Weather Service issued a warning about potentially hazardous weather and a flood warning was placed into effect until July 5th, with showers and even thunderstorms expected the overnight July 4th and 5th.
While the Splitrock Creek is flooded to its banks, our neighbors to the south in Doon, Iowa are still cleaning up after a massive train derailment of nearly three dozen oil tankers. Cleanup efforts continue. This has resulted in evacuations of many Iowans from their homes in Doon and down the river in Rock Valley, Iowa.
