Relay for Life Brandon Garretson is this week Friday, June 9! Plan to head up to the Football Field in the evening to cheer on the participants, and show your support by visiting the silent auction. People's Insurance donated to Vince Eide and family, the pool had its opening day, and Jesse James Days is coming up! Make sure you note that the GCSF Golf Tournament, the Bean Bag Tournament, the Parade, and the Jesse James Road Race prefer or require pre-registration!

Jesse James Days Starts Next Friday

Jesse James Days in Garretson will start next week on Friday, June 16. This year the Garretson Commercial Club and community will be trying several new and interesting things to spice up Jesse James days, as well as the fun annual activities everyone enjoys.

Events begin with the with the Garretson Community Scholarship Foundation GCSF Golf Tourney, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. This is a popular event, and helps Garretson area students seeking higher education to meet the increasing costs of getting that education. Dinner and Awards ceremony will begin at 4 p.m.

From 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., final registration for the Grow Garretson sponsored Bean Bag Tournament will be then, sponsored by Skrewballz, Sports Cabin, and The Gulch (formerly Lyons Den, recently renovated, reopened and under new owners.) The first bean bag team brackets will start at 6:15 and the tournament, held on Main Avenue and 3rd Street, will go until finished. Adult wristbands are required for open container on the streets during game play on Friday and will be readily available at any of the listed participant locations.

Right away on Saturday morning, the Jesse James Road Race has now added the State Line Bike/Run. This new race format includes something for everyone: a bike/run, a 1 mile walk, a 5k Run, and a 10k Run. See our related story for more.

The Garretson Fire Department will host a pancake breakfast with a Red Cross Bloodmobile taking donations alongside. At 9 a.m. and throughout the day there will be a slow pitch softball tournament held at the Jaycee sports complex.

The parade this year has some very special guests. The El Riad Shriners have designated Garretson as their local parade! This year they will be bringing more than fifteen plus units to rumble on the city streets of Garretson! If you want to participate in the parade, the parade committee submitted a letter to the editor this week that will instruct you what to do, see page 8.

Another thing that is new and unique to this Jesse James days are all the activities that will be taking place down at Jaycee’s Complex. “This year we’ve hired Carolan Rentals to bring in inflatables and fun things for children of all ages,” said Mary Ann Carlson of the Garretson Commercial Club. “The Commercial Club’s toddler train rides and the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull will be hosted next door at the Zion Lutheran Church Parking lot as well as a lot of other activities to be held down at the ballpark.”

Kids wristbands are to be sold for $10 a kid or $30 max per a family. The GFD will also be hosting fire truck rides that will go to and from the ballpark to downtown, shuttling families back and forth from the ball diamond to more activities happening downtown such as the Historical Society's Museum walking tacos and Bingo hosted at the Garretson Senior center. The Kringen family will also be hosting horse wagon rides. All downtown restaurants and businesses will be open with sales and specials as well.

As the sun goes down, the fun turns ups with the Commercial Club and Skrewballz also hosting Dueling Duo for the second time.

“They were fantastic last year, so don’t miss this fabulous performance!” said Carlson.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $25 and can be pre-purchased at Skrewballz, First Bank and Trust in Garretson or at the Jesse James Country Store. You can also contact Mary Ann Carlson directly to get your ticket at 940-3101. There are limited tickets available so it’s first come, first served. If any remain by Saturday, July 17, they will sell them at the door.

Sunday begins with Zion Lutheran hosting an outdoor community church service at 10 a.m. The offering will be donated 50/50 to the Ellis and Eide families, who lost their homes in last month’s double house fire.

Starting at 1 p.m. the Garretson FFA Chapter will again host their Annual Fishing Derby down at Splitrock Park. And at 5 p.m. Palisades Lutheran Church will host their pie and ice creams social.

All in all, this year Jesse James Days is looking to be one of the largest ever. Don’t miss it.

Memorial Day was commemorated by the Henry G Fix Post #23 of the American Legion, Nordstrom's Automotive is expanding, and the State Track Meet results are all featured in this week's issue. Congratulations, 2017 Garretson High School Graduates! We also congratulate Carmyn and Matt Schrank, a local Garretson couple who welcomed their new son in the parking lot of Lewis Drug. This coming Monday is Memorial Day, and the local American Legion will be hosting a program at 7:00 pm at the Dugout (located on Main Ave and 2nd St). The Legion Auxiliary will be gathering at 1:00 pm on Friday, May 26 to distribute poppies, do crafts, and have snacks. The donations for poppies are sent to the Veterans who make the poppies, and are also used by our unit to support our local veterans and post members.

A powerful storm robbed a family of their home two years ago, and last Thursday, the community was devastated to find the same family to be victims of a house fire. Rollie and Cherie Ellis lost their home in the blaze, and the home next door of Vince Eide was also destroyed. Heartbroken, the community has banded together to help provide for the two families. There are currently several ways to donate: First Bank & Trust has two accounts (Zion Lutheran Church for the Benefit of the Ellis Family and Zion Lutheran Church for the Benefit of the Eide Family); Target.com Registry (Cherie Rollie Kodie & Maggie's housewarming registry) Cherie's Kitchen (Pampered Chef with both a registry and the ability to order and allow Cherie to order several items for either free or reduced price), and you can mail gift cards for Ace Hardware and Campbell's Supply to V Eide at PO Box 135 Garretson, SD 57030.

Between golf, a Little Library, and the City Council meeting, this issue is packed! But we'd say it's also our cutest issue ever, as we feature the excitement and fun of Story Time at the Garretson Public Library. Megan and Matt Rollag honor the memory of their daughter, Lyla with a Little Library at their home in Brandon. The City opts to raise rates over a three year period to get on the same rate schedule as the state, which allows for better grant funding. The Garretson Volunteer Fire Department is going to have an EMT class beginning on May 15, see page two for more information on registration.

Some sad news this week as we learn that an International Student from Southwest Minnesota State University drowned at Palisades Park. A GoFundMe is set up at https://www.gofundme.com/abeensings to help his family bring him home. In happier news, Kris Frerk is honored as a 2017 SDEA Friend of Education, The Gulch Bar & Grill is now open for business, and the first major fundraiser for Blue Dragon Academy was a success. Diamonds, Denim, and Destinations is the first major fundraiser for the Blue Dragon Academy Daycare facility and will be held on April 22. Omar Thornton, a chef at Bros Americana and cooking class teacher at Plum's in Sioux Falls, has bought Annie's Coffeehouse and is planning to open in June with a full restaurant, coffeeshop, candy store, and more. The Sioux Falls Fire Dept did some water and rocks rescue training at Devil's Gulch, and Nordstrom's Automotive will be having its annual Amnesty Day. Learn more inside this week's issue!
