Twenty teams participated in the Boys' Classic.

The Michael Entringer Classic awards scholarships to outstanding seniors from the participating teams who show good sportsmanship, participated in high school sports for at least two years, and includes statisticians, student managers, and cheerleaders along with basketball athletes in the application requirements. In 2024, they awarded 58 seniors $1,000 each. Applications for the scholarships are due March 1, 2025 for this year's senior class.

On Tuesday, the team hosted Deubrook Area in the Dragon's Lair. The two teams battled it out, but Deubrook narrowly managed to pull out the win on the Dragons, 61-63.

They'll head to Hills on January 6, and host Dell Rapids St. Mary's in a Doubleheader game on Tuesday, January 7.

On Tuesday, December 31, the team hosted Deubrook Area in a Doubleheader game. Unfortunately the young team continued to see their opponents prevail, as Deubrook took home the win 18-49.

The Lady Dragons will next hit the GHS courts on Tuesday, January 7 in a doubleheader with Dell Rapids St. Mary's.

MVPCS Invite has good showing from Blue Dragon Wrestlers

By Coach Brady Schleuter

The high school wrestling headed west on Saturday, December 21 to compete in the MVPCS (Plankinton) invite. It was a solid day of wrestling as five individuals came up placing in the tournament.

These individuals placed well: Chase Costello 2nd, Lukas Ludewig 6th, Brock Bonte 4th, Cole Schleuter 5th, and Tanner Baatz 5th.

"As a team we went out and competed, there are things that we still need to work on, but over-all I thought it was a good day," Coach Brady Schleuter said.

Chase Costello ended up losing in the championship round to Senior Landon Flogstad of MCM.

"Chase wrestled really well today, started off slow and picked it up during the day. I've been impressed with how hard he has been working in the practice room and it's showing during matches," Schleuter said.

The Dragons got a little break as their next competition is January 4th in the Webster invite.

Tragic Christmas Eve fire affects local family

On December 24, Kim Johnson came home to anyone's worst nightmare. She had been celebrating Christmas at her son's house down the road, and arrived home to find smoke coming from her house.

Johnson immediately called 911, and fire trucks from Garretson, Jasper, Dell Rapids, and Trent arrived to battle the flames. She and her daughter Noel broke through a basement window to rescue the family dog, who was subsequently treated for smoke inhalation but was improving thanks to quick thinking from a first responder, who administered oxygen to the animal upon arrival.

While the exact cause of the fire is not yet known, it is suspected that it began with faulty wiring in a kitchen appliance. Fire trucks had to bring multiple sources of water, and battled the flames until early Christmas morning.

Johnson, a longtime resident of the Garretson/Sherman area, is a mother to three, Colton Trende, Dakota Johnson, and Noel Johnson. Noel was still living at home while attending college, and both women lost all belongings in the fire. To make matters worse, Noel's birthday was December 26.

The community immediately began surrounding the family with support, as did the barrel racing community that Johnson is a part of.

Friends set up a GoFundMe, began sending out Venmo information, and began setting up an online silent auction.

To help the family, they request Venmo or Target or Walmart gift cards for immediate needs, donations to the GoFundMe, or supporting the silent auction. The silent auction is currently accepting items and will open for bidding on December 29. Final bids will be accepted until 8:00 a.m. on January 4, 2025.

The GoFundMe can be found at https://gofund.me/295efff3 and the Silent Auction is being held on Facebook (search "Silent Auction Benefit for Kim Johnson").

Hometown Christmas fun

Saturday's Hometown Christmas was a success despite some less-than-ideal weather. The Legion was packed with holiday cheer as visitors enjoyed the breakfast from the Legionnaires, shopping and silent auction options from vendors and the Garretson Commercial Club, and bingo and chili with the Garretson Fire Department. At the school, eight games of basketball were played against Chester, with Boys' Varsity and JV pulling strong wins, and quality shopping, caroling, and food were found at local establishments.

It was all capped off with story time and crafts at the library, visits with Santa at The Treasure Chest, a 30-year anniversary celebration at the museum, and a parade of lights downtown. See more photos throughout this issue.

Above, Elijah Ramsbey won the "Guess the Candy" contest at the Garretson Museum for the second year in a row. He guessed 162 pieces, and the correct answer was 161. Judy Hanson won the "Guess the Weight" contest at The Treasure Chest AND the Meat Cooler at the Hometown Christmas Raffle, a big accomplishment as well!

Intercepted Santa Letters!

A little elf at the Garretson Elementary School was able to sneak away some "Dear Santa" letters from Mrs. Bass' second grade classroom earlier this week before they were brought to the North Pole, and showed them to us here at the Gazette. We hope you enjoy the requests and thoughts of our local students!

Dear Santa,

For Christmas please can you get homeless people blankets and food. Can I have a walkie talkie and for my teacher to be happy. A doll house and a Barbie car and a new tablet. Love, Jenna

Dear Santa, Do you need more hot coco mix and marshmallows and do your Elves need more snow pants for Christmas? I would like for Christmas is snow! Love, Zoey

Dear Santa, I hope my family is not sick and I want for the poor to get good stuff for them. I want the nursing home to feel good. Have a Jolly Christmas. Love, Luke Sittig
