From the Desk of Commissioner Jean Bender

Commissioner Jean Bender

While there is much that is difficult to predict about 2021, we do know it will be a year of tremendous change for Minnehaha County. We will have a new States Attorney, Daniel Haggar, as well as a new Treasurer and Auditor. Minnehaha Treasurer, Pam Nelson, decided not to pursue reelection so voters will choose a new Treasurer during the general election. Additionally, Minnehaha County Auditor, Bob Litz, recently announced his intent to retire effective December 31st this year. We appreciate the years of service Pam Nelson and Bob Litz have provided to the citizens of Minnehaha County.

Auditor Litz’ resignation creates a vacancy for the last two years of a four-year term that will be filled by Commission appointment. The next full term for the Auditor will be elected by voters in Minnehaha County during the November 2022 general election and be sworn into office in March 2023. The Commission takes its responsibility to identify a qualified candidate for this important position very seriously and is using numerous outlets to recruit for this position.

The Auditor serves a critical role for all of citizens of Minnehaha County. Under South Dakota statutes, the Auditor is responsible for preparing an approximately $113 million budget, creating related financial reports, levying and apportioning $350+ million in property and other taxes, maintaining accurate records of official County meetings, and preserving documents. The Auditor’s office is also responsible for administering primary, general, and special elections for the County and state. These responsibilities include identifying, training, and supervising up to 250 individuals to conduct elections.

The Auditor’s Office is comprised of approximately 10 staff members and has a budget of over $1.2 million.

Minnehaha County is currently soliciting applications for the Auditor position. The selected candidate must be a Minnehaha County resident. The Commission believes a well-qualified candidate will possess a background in accounting, finance, or business administration plus five years of progressively responsible accounting or financial managerial experience; significant budget management experience; and knowledge of elections procedures and requirements along with excellent project management skills. Obviously this is a great position for someone looking for a challenge and an opportunity for public service.

If you know any well-qualified candidates interested in public service, please encourage them to submit an application. Submission should include cover letter and resume detailing applicable experience and salary requirements and must be received by 5 p.m. on November 4th at http://jobs.minnehahacounty.org.
