Election, new playground, new statue

Date:

The Garretson School Board met in regular session on April 14, 2025. Main topics of discussion were the canvassing of the April 8th Election, the major improvements coming to the playground courtesy of the Garretson PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), and a new Blue Dragon Statue to replace the one damaged in the 2015 storm, hopefully before graduation. The meeting had several areas to highlight, however, including several congratulatory items for teachers and students.

In 2015, Dwayne “Jake” Jacobson and his wife Shirley Jacobson donated this aluminum metal statue to the Garretson School District. Sadly, only a few short months later that infamous 2015 storm on June 22nd struck, and knocked it over. Though it was repaired and re-erected, its wings were permanently damaged. Now, their family will be donating a replacement. //Gazette file photos

As the meeting began, Natasha Mendoza asked if there were any changes to the agenda, and Superintendent Guy Johnson said that he had one addition, which was to add the resignation of Dakota Johnson to the consent agenda under personnel actions. This was in addition to the executive summary, which containing the current teaching contracts awaiting approval. The board did approve this along with the whole of the consent agenda in one motion.

Having no old business of conflicts of interest to discuss, the board heard from the PTO. The PTO has been raising funds for playground improvements for the last 3 years and the project itself is around $155,000 in total costs. Heather Schiltz addressed the board with a report on the project. Schiltz says that this July they’ll be spending a total of between $61,000 to $62,000 to bring the rest of the entire playground up to date. This is after years of work and multiple fundraisers by the PTO.

UPDATE 4/17/25: Jacob Schweitzer was initially quoted as saying 355 votes, which was a mis-type. It was 344 votes. The first edition noted it was Mike Decker on the installation project, not Mike Stoterau. This has been corrected.
