SIOUX FALLS – At the Tuesday, Aug. 20, meeting of the Minnehaha County Commission, commissioners addressed three different public nuisance issues in, essentially, three different ways.

The first, and the only one they declared a public nuisance, was on property belonging to Randall and Janice Meneffee at 47565 Neener Cir., 2.5 miles north of Sioux Falls.

On Tuesday, Aug. 20, because the property owners were present and willing to work with Planning and Zoning on the issue, county commissioners voted to give them more time to work on solving the problem on their land. //Submitted photo

Kevin Hoekman from the county Planning and Zoning Office displayed several photos of the land showing abandoned property and other problems.

The commissioners, who had seen similar photos and information on all of the nuisances in question, seemed to agree that this was the least egregious of the three.

However, Hoekman explained that although four notices – plus the notice of the hearing – had been sent to the owners, no one ever reached out to his office to work on the problem.

Adding to that, the landowners did not show up to the commission meeting to defend themselves or oppose the action, so commissioners voted 5-0 to declare the property a public nuisance.

When a property is declared a nuisance, owners still have around 30 days to abate the problem before the county sends in crews to deal with the situation.
