Ambulance Breakfast May 5 at 9 a.m.

On Sunday, the Garretson Ambulance will be hosting its annual Breakfast Fundraiser. The meal, which will consist of ham, eggs, muffins, and toast, will be served from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion Dugout located at 504 N Main Ave. Cost is a freewill donation, and proceeds will benefit the volunteer ambulance crew.

In 2023, the ambulance responded to over 220 calls with their crew of 19, which includes 10 EMTs, 3 paramedics, 4 nurses, and 2 drivers. Ideally, there would be more than 20 volunteers to fill the roster, but they are currently in a good place, according to Kurt Nelson. A soon-to-be-finished EMT class has 8 students, and at a recent city council meeting, he was hopeful that many of them would stay on to be part of either the ambulance crew or the fire department crew.

The Garretson Ambulance depends on volunteers and a mix of state, federal, and freely-given donations to operate, and is grateful for all the support the community has shown over the years.

A few years ago, fundraising and grants helped the Garretson Ambulance purchase a new truck to replace their failing unit, which restored full services to the area. They now assist around the county for calls as they are available.

Glow Party on May 4

Garretson's Dragons on the Move and the Garretson Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) have banded together to host a Glow Party on Saturday, May 4. Open to all in the community, the glow party will include a 5k run, inflatables, plenty of glow sticks, pizza, water, and music galore, with the fun starting at 5:00 p.m. and the race beginning at 8:00 p.m. All events will be held at the Garretson Athletic Complex, and the proceeds will benefit the Garretson PTO's playground upgrade effort.

Dragons on the Move is a new running group based off the popular "Girls on the Move" idea for both boys and girls in elementary school. It meets twice a week for an hour to get students moving and learning healthy habits with games, running practice, and discussions.

If you don't run, don't worry, as walkers are encouraged to participate! The cost for adults is $10 and for students it'll be $5. Glow stick packages, pizza, and more will be for sale.
