Legion honors community members

Last week, the yearly Legion Dinner honored and recognized several community members. Levi Top, Brecken Weir, and Jakob Gnadt were honored with a National Legion Auxiliary Good Deed award last Thursday by the Post #23 American Legion Auxiliary. Last Christmas, the three boys gifted a fellow classmate a bicycle when they learned their friend's bike was in poor condition, with missing brakes and a pedal.

The Legion Baseball Coaches were recognized for their hard work:  (L to R) 16U Assistant Coach Kevin Jessen, 16U Coach Kiley Buettner, 14U Coach Cody Linneweber, Kevin Steckler, and Brian Siemonsma.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY AUGUST  2024

The American Legion Auxiliary met on August 1 beginning with a delicious chicken and sweet corn meal with the Legion at 6:30. We joined the Legion members for opening ceremonies.  We had the pleasure of hearing from our boys staters and girls’ staters as well as several of this years’ baseball coaches.  Recognition was given to several outstanding citizens in our community as well as a good deed award given to three students for their outstanding compassion for a fellow student.

We proceeded with our auxiliary meeting which was chaired by Cheryl Lyngen.  Roll call indicated one officer absent.  The secretary’s minutes were read, approved and placed on file.  The treasurer’s report was read, approved and placed on file for audit.

Cheryl reported that our bakeless bakesale has been a huge success.  Bingo was held at Palisades Healthcare with 17 residents and 6 auxiliary volunteers as well as a number of daycare students.

The secretary read the communications which included thank you’s from our girls staters as well as a newsletter from the V.A. in Sioux Falls.

There were two bills and a motion to pay them both was made by Denise and seconded by Kelly.  The motion carried.

Our State President, Anna Mae Warnier was introduced as well as guests, Joyce Smith and Roxy Brenden.

The National Convention will be in New Orleans August 23-29.  September 5 is our next Auxiliary meeting and we will be serving a potluck for the Legion and Auxiliary.  A-K will be bringing main dishes and L-Z will be bringing salads.  September 11 is Nursing Home Bingo and volunteers are being contacted.  Our baked spaghetti fundraiser supper will be here at the Legion on Friday, October 18.  The money raised will be for our scholarship fund.

October 26 is the district 7 fall meeting at Dell Rapids.

My Country Tis of Thee was sung and the closing prayer was given by Chaplain, Sue.  The door prize was won by Kelly.

-Ethel Kurtz, secretary
