The Garretson Parks Board Puts Citizens in Action

Date:

On Saturday, April 28, the Parks Board invited the community to join them for a Park Clean-up Day, to help ensure Splitrock Park is ready for campers and visitors after a long winter.

Chris Lynde of Affordable Tree Fellers, Greg Erickson of American Landscaping, Boy Scout Group #582 out of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church, and several members of the community joined together to pick up trash, rake leaves and branches, pull out underbrush and overgrowth, and clean up campsite #13. This site had recently been cleared of its overgrowth by Vandersnick Excavating, so campers could enjoy the beautiful quartzite terrace on the site (which had previously been completely hidden by the overgrowth) and view of the river.

With a skidloader, dump truck, rakes, and a lot of elbow grease, a lot of progress was made. However, the group didn't get quite as far as it was hoping.

"We've learned a lot," said Parks Board member Kelli Schleuter of the first Parks Clean Up Day. "Now we know we need to get the heavy equipment into the park the night before, so the workers can concentrate on clearing out small stuff." Continued on Page 3
