Chemical Spill Shuts Down Truck Route

Date:

Chemical Spill Cleanup

On Friday morning, March 6, a chemical spill involving a train car occurred by Nachurs Alpine Solutions, a liquid fertilizer company based off Railroad Avenue in Garretson. The spill was immediately neutralized, but clean up shut down the truck route until Sunday evening.

The Gazette reached out to Nachurs for comment, but calls were not returned as of press time. Details have been sparse, but the SD DENR has confirmed that all appropriate measures were taken in clean up and there is no further danger to the residents of Garretson.

UPDATE 3/11/20: As of Wednesday morning, March 11, the truck route was still closed to traffic. We apologize for this omission, as we were not informed that it was still closed as of press time.

UPDATE 3/12/20: The Gazette has obtained information that the chemical was Phosphoric Acid, and approximately 3000 gallons were spilled from a rail car due to equipment failure. The truck route remains closed and work continues on clean up.
