The American Legion Henry G. Fix Post #23 in Garretson is hosting a very big celebration this weekend to commemorate 100 years of service and citizenship.
One hundred years ago the Great War ended. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars, but sadly humankind has not tired yet of our desire for conflict. However, to commemorate the sacrifice of those who have died in all of our nation’s conflicts, and to recognize the service and citizenship of those who have served our nation in war and peace, the American Legion was founded. Both Nationwide and here in Garretson, Legion activities have always put community service and citizen stewardship first.
The activities will begin on Saturday, July 6th at 1 p.m. with an open house. The community is invited to the Post #23 dugout. There will be several displays including a traveling pillar display, the new post history books, the KIA display and a Post member memorabilia display.
Starting at 4 there will be a short program welcoming and thanking the community of Garretson. Fred Nelson, the South Dakota Legion Commander, will speak. The Singing Legionnaires will also perform.
From 5-7 p.m. the Legion will host a free burger feed and at 6:30 the three Legion baseball teams will divide up and face each other in a friendly ball tournament.
The Legion will celebrate the 4th of July with a fireworks show as usual, but they will postpone the fireworks until Saturday, July 6th to coincide with this celebration. Fireworks will begin at dusk on the 6th at the Garretson Football Complex.
