Staff reports from the Gazette and Blue Ink
Despite a cool and blustery spring, the golfers have finally gotten the opportunity to compete, and at the Jesse James Invitational last Friday, the Boys' Varsity team took 1st place.
Varsity competed in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, April 27. The Boys' Varsity team nearly took first at that meet, but lost on the fourth golfer tie breaker.
Dell Rapids was originally slated to be an 18-hole meet, but due to weather it was shortened to nine holes.
On the boys’ side, who played the front nine holes at Rocky Run, three of the four boys medaled: Rave Uhlich (41, 4th), Ryan Flanagan (42, 6th), and Cooper Long (42, 7th).
For the girls, who played the tricky back nine holes at Rocky Run, two of the Garretson girls earned medaling honors: Peyton Hove (50, 5th) and Katie Hanson (55, 10th). The girls team finished third at the Dells meet.
The teams then competed again on Friday, April 30 at River Ridge. The boys took the home advantage, coming away with a team total of 124 points and 1st place.
Second place was snagged by Deubrook with a team score of 126, and in third place with 138 points was McCook Central/Montrose.
Individually, Ryan Flanagan took home 1st place overall with a score of 38 points, followed by Cooper Long (42, 5th) and Jake Schroeder (44, 8th).
The girls placed 5th with 150 points. The top three girls' teams at the Jesse James Invitational were Howard, Sioux Valley, and McCook Central/Montrose. Individually, Katie Hanson scored 8th with 45 points.
The Varsity teams will be heading to the Big East Conference in Beresford on Friday.
