BLUE DRAGONS SUB-VARSITY TEAMS STRUGGLE IN EARLY SEASON

C Team Basketball

The Blue Dragons C team (0-3) has run into some difficult competition, including the West Central Trojans on December 20th.

Garretson could only muster one made free throw in the first quarter of play while the Trojans put up six. Then while Garretson tripled their output in the second quarter, West Central matched that and tripled theirs too, extending their lead to 24 – 4 going into halftime.

The struggles for the Blue Dragon offense continued in the third quarter being held scoreless. And while they put up seven in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough as the Trojans put up 11 of their own. West Central took care of the Blue Dragons 44-11.

The Blue Dragon C team then traveled to Flandreau at the end of the calendar year looking to find their first W of the young season. Garretson did score the most points that they had all season so far, coming away with 30 points.

But the Fliers took care of business on their end, draining six three pointers and tallying 41 points overall.

Leading scoring for the Blue Dragons was Ian Beuttner with 12 points. Treyton Chester and Junior Olson each had six. Rounding out the scoring for Garretson was Dylan Wolf, Tyler Edmundson, and Treyton Decker with two points.

The Blue Dragons will have a chance to redeem themselves against the Fliers on January 25 in Flandreau.

JV Basketball

Much like the C team, the Garretson Blue Dragon JV team has struggled to close out games and find their first W of the season. After dropping their first three games of the season to Chester, Canton, and Tri-Valley, Garretson returned to their home floor hosting the West Central Trojans.

The Trojans’ strong start, going up double digits quickly on the Blue Dragons, set the tone for the whole game. The Garretson JV scored just 10 points on the evening compared to West Central’s even attack of 54.

Finding the bottom of the net for Garretson were Blaine Trower with four points. Clay Lardy, Dylan Jessen, and Treyton Chester each tallied two points on the night. This loss dropped the Blue Dragon JV to 0-4.

Garretson was hoping for a fresh start to the season in the new year as the Blue Dragons traveled to Dell Rapids St. Mary on January 4.

Garretson played aggressive but had a hard time stopping the offensive attack as the Cardinals put up 12 quick points in the first quarter. However, Garretson scored seven, making it a five point spread a quarter of the way through the game.

In the second quarter the teams exchanged buckets, each scoring 10 points, keeping the five point difference going into halftime.

Dell Rapids St. Mary made some critical halftime adjustments though and found a way to get to the line more often in the second half and while they only converted half of their free throws, their more aggressive game was difficult for Garretson to adjust to. The Cardinals took down the Blue Dragons 44-25.

Garretson was led by Ian Beuttner with 17 points. Rounding out the scoring was Tyler Edmundson with 5, Dylan Jessen with 2, and Matthew Gilbert with 1.

Garretson hosts the Colman-Egan Hawks on Friday, January 14 in the Dragons’ Lair. JV starts at 4:00 with varsity at 6:00.
