“Remember, you are there to serve all citizens, not only a particular group,” is the advice out-going Minnehaha County Commissioner Jean Bender would give to anyone seeking a political office, especially a local one.

Bender, who has served on the commission for the past 10 years, decided after the last time she ran for re-election in 2020, that she would not run again. She made an agreement with her husband Mike that would be it.

Bender was originally appointed to fill a vacancy on the commission when then-commissioner Judge John Pekas was appointed to the Second Judicial Circuit in 2014.

After that, she was re-elected in 2016, and again in 2020.

“It was never a life-long goal of mine to be on the commission,” Bender said, “but I saw it was something I could do using the skill set I’ve been given.”
