On Sunday, December 20, a small group of volunteers brought joy and food to approximately 50 people in the Garretson area.
Amy Bohl, who has been leading the Bountiful Blessings program through Zion Lutheran Church since August, usually helps provide meals to approximately 15-20 people each month. This month, with the holiday and the pandemic, she wanted to do more.
"It just takes an idea," Bohl said. She said she had reached out to several people in the community to get the names of those who may be lonely, isolated for Christmas, or who may be suffering from health issues. She was able to find several who were homebound, and also found that many just wanted the human contact.
"People just wanted to talk," she said. She took the ease with how she found names as a sign that people needed prayer and a kind person to reach out.
Garretson Food Center's Ron Luke was able to help organize and cook the meal, which consisted of ham, cheesy hashbrowns, corn, and a bun.
"I couldn't have done it without him," Bohl said of Luke.
Blue Dragon Academy's young students also helped out, creating care packages that contained Christmas goodies such as popcorn and a cookie. The students also decorated the paper bags the goodies were contained in.
A small team of delivery drivers, which consisted of Letaila Dueis, Macy Bohl, Preston Bohl, Jason Bohl, Kris Frerk, and Amy Bohl, brought the meals to those on the list.
Frerk also provided help from the food pantry, and obtained the goodie bags from BDA.
"I've already gotten thank you's and Christmas cards thanking the little elves," said Bohl. She's just happy to be able to give back and bring joy to those who needed the outreach.
