Despite a hard-fought game, the Garretson 14U baseball team took a loss last Tuesday in Dell Rapids after they took on Dell Rapids Red.
Chase Costello opened the game with a double on a line drive to left field at the top of the first inning, and scored when Cade Risty grounded out to the shortstop. Not to be outdone, Jacoby Costello followed soon after and singled on a ground ball to center field, ultimately scoring when Wyatt Potter hit a grounder and reached second on an error by the third baseman.
Garretson didn't hold on to the lead for long as Dells had a strong showing in the bottom of the first, scoring three. They worked to overcome it, briefly taking the lead again at the top of the third while holding Dells to zero more points. Unfortunately, the young team was unable to cross home plate again during the game, and Dells took the game 4-11.
Toeing the mound for Garretson were Costello and Cooper Smith, who each took three innings. Costello opened the game, striking out three, allowing seven hits, and walking three. Smith also struck out three, allowed four hits, and walked one.
Reaching on a hit were Colton Buchholz, who hit two in three at bats; Blake Benson, Potter, J. Costello and C. Costello.
Garretson 14U hosted Hills Beaver Creek on Tuesday (results not available at press time), and will be heading to Humboldt next Tuesday to take on West Central Gold. They'll be back on the home field on Friday, June 7 against the Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m.
