Friday, July 19, the Garretson VFW 14U Baseball team traveled to Elkton to play in the Class “B” State tournament. Their first and third games resulted in wins over Castlewood and Groton, but they had a disappointing loss of 2-12 to Redfield, placing the team in 3rd place overall.

On Friday, the team played against Castlewood in 90-degree temps and 70% humidity that felt like 106 degrees. Castlewood scored the first point, but pitchers Dylan Kindt and Jayse Miller held back any further scores after the teams tied 1-1 in the second inning. After several back and forths, Garretson managed to pull out two more points, winning the game 3-1.

In the second game on Saturday, the weather improved, but Redfield got the upper hand early and Garretson was unable to come back. Garretson did manage to score first, but after that, the offense of Redfield got the upper hand, ending the game at 2-12 in favor of Redfield.

The consolation game against Groton was a different story. The game was hard-won, with both teams tied 4-4 until the bottom of the ninth, when Preston Bohl was walked and helped score a run. The fifth inning was magic for Garretson, with three points scored. The game ended at 4-5 in favor of Garretson, securing the team at 3rd place in the State tournament, and an overall successful season with 19 wins and only 4 losses.
